About Teacher Yun Ooi💖👇👇
Where the interest in teaching started
In primary school I had a gentle teacher who made the job look worth doing. In secondary school I had a strict Chinese teacher who kept telling us, patiently and repeatedly, never to give up on our mother tongue. Remembering how seriously both of them taught, I applied to teachers' college the moment I finished school.
A different kind of Teacher Wong
Straight out of teachers' college I was posted to a city school. City teaching is demanding — the pace is tight and everything has to be fast and exact. A few years later, for my parents' sake, I applied to transfer back to my home town. I assumed a small-town school would be easier. It was a different test. Here I had to slow down, teach to the individual, and find twice the patience to walk children through their work. That is who I am: a teacher who can be strict and still be endlessly patient.
What she holds to
Most children tell me languages are hard and maths and science are easier to enjoy. To keep them interested in literature I teach through storytelling, grounded in everyday life, taking something deep and making it plain. Lately I have also been using short films as teaching material. That is who I am: a teacher who keeps trying a different way in.
About this course
😊 The upper-primary Chinese writing course is taught live. Afterwards, students can revise as often as they like from the replay. The course includes one-to-one marking, with the corrections explained in audio. Once a child can see their own weak spots, they remember them and stop repeating them.
😊 This is not just any teacher. Yun Ooi is a school Chinese specialist who knows the exam format thoroughly and knows exactly which mistakes children keep making.
Her real strength is reading where a child's head is at. She knows the syllabus, sets questions that tie back to the exam, and teaches technique a student carries with them — a writing brain that thinks, not one that memorises. The method is meant to be used.
😊 Yun Ooi has 16 years of teaching behind her, which is why she spots a student's weak point quickly and corrects it before it sets.
😊 The teacher marks each student's composition one to one and points out the mistakes individually, which is how a child remembers and stops repeating them. This marking happens after class, on the teacher's own time — it is worth a great deal and it works.
Interaction in class matters too. The teacher asks questions as the lesson goes, and checks whether anyone is stuck. Students who do not follow something can ask right there, and the teacher will explain it again, as many times as it takes.
